Algeria, Egypt, and Morocco One Foot In The World Cup; South Africa Faces Points Deduction

Algeria, Egypt, and Morocco strengthened their World Cup qualification hopes with crucial home victories on Tuesday, while South Africa’s campaign could suffer a major blow due to a player eligibility controversy.

South Africa defeated Benin 2-0 away, extending their lead at the top of Group C. However, their progress is under threat after revelations that midfielder Teboho Mokoena was fielded in last Friday’s 3-1 win over Lesotho despite being suspended. Previous cases in African qualifiers have seen teams docked points for similar infractions.

“I’m not commenting on the matter, it is something that will be sorted over the next week,” said South Africa’s coach Hugo Broos. Despite the controversy, South Africa remains ahead as Nigeria stumbled to a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe after conceding a stoppage-time equalizer.

Amoura’s Hat-Trick Fires Algeria to Victory

In Group G, Mohamed Amoura netted a stunning hat-trick as Algeria thrashed Mozambique 5-1, moving three points clear at the top. Egypt also extended their lead in Group A with a 1-0 win over Sierra Leone, courtesy of Ahmed Zizo’s first-half strike.

Morocco maintained their 100% record in Group E, defeating Tanzania 2-0 with goals from Nayef Aguerd and Brahim Diaz. Meanwhile, Cape Verde shocked Angola 2-1 to go top of Group D, and Cameroon secured a 3-1 home victory over Libya thanks to Vincent Aboubakar’s brace.

With four matches remaining, the nine group winners will automatically qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the best four runners-up will battle for one additional spot. Qualifiers resume in September, with the final round scheduled for October.
