Algerian Boxer Imane Khelif Sues Elon Musk and JK Rowling For Cyberbullying

In a remarkable twist leading up to the Paris 2024 Olympics, Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has initiated legal action against high-profile figures, including author J.K. Rowling and social media mogul Elon Musk, alleging cyberbullying.

This lawsuit follows Khelif’s triumphant victory in Paris, where she clinched gold despite prior controversies surrounding her eligibility.

Khelif’s road to the Olympics was tumultuous after her disqualification from the 2023 World Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) due to a failure to meet gender eligibility tests.

However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) intervened, deeming Khelif eligible to compete.

“This is a question of justice: women must be allowed to take part in women’s competitions. And the two are women,” stated IOC President Thomas Bach, referring to Khelif and fellow boxer Lin Yu-ting, who also faced scrutiny but was cleared to participate.

The cyberbullying allegations stem from public comments made by Musk and Rowling on social media platforms, with Khelif’s legal representative, Nabil Boudi, asserting that these remarks contributed to a negative online environment surrounding the athlete’s participation.

The Paris public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation following Khelif’s complaint.

While a prominent French legal blogger noted that French law might not apply to actions by Musk or Rowling committed outside the country, those who shared derogatory messages from within France could still face charges.

Khelif’s participation sparked intense discussions online, particularly after Italian boxer Angela Carini withdrew from their bout just 46 seconds in.
