Man who was rescued by Mike Mbuvi Sonko after being convicted of stealing Unga from Naivas Supermarket has been charged afresh before Milimani Law Courts with being in possession of bhang.
Alvin Chivondo of Kakamega County Shinyalu, who made headlines after being imprisoned for a year for stealing maize flour “Unga” from Naivas Supermarket in Nairobi, is back in court.
Chivondo was charged with possessing a narcotic drug, specifically bhang, at his arraignment before Nairobi’s Chief Magistrate Bernard Ochoi.
The accused was released following a public outcry led by Azimio Presidential candidate Raila Amollo Odinga, who condemned the Magistrate for imprisoning a thief who stole unga, and his fine was paid by former Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko, who has suddenly developed an interest in becoming a State guest in the case.
The accused claimed that law enforcement officers arrested him while he was drinking alcohol near the Globe roundabout Cinema in Nairobi and accused him of smoking bhang and possessing the drug.
The duty Court was informed that the accused had 400 grams of bhang worth $2,000 in his possession.
He entered a plea of not guilty to the charges. Chief Magistrate Bernard Ochoi released him on a bond of Ksh100,000 with a surety of a similar amount with an alternative cash bail of Ksh30,000 with one contact person pending trial on August 5, 2022.
