Amason Kingi Elected New Senate Speaker

Kingi received 46 votes during the election held in the Senate Chambers on Thursday, September 8.

Amason Jeffah Kingi of Kenya Kwanza was elected as the third Senate speaker under the 2010 Constitution.

The former Kilifi County governor’s victory became inevitable after Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka withdrew his candidacy for the seat.

According to the Standing Orders, senators, both elected and nominated, must first take the oath of office before electing the speaker. The election was conducted using a secret ballot.

Other candidates who were in the race included George Bush, Isaac Aluochier Polo, George Njoroge Kuria , Beatrice Kathomi, and  Fredrick Karuri  Muchiri.
