America Denies Promoting LGBTQ Agenda in Kenya

Following the Ksh.16 billion in donor funding last week, the US government has distanced itself from accusations of promoting the LGBTQ agenda in the country.

In a press conference on Friday, US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman denied any connection between the drought relief donations and the controversial Supreme Court ruling on LGBTQ rights issued on Friday.

Whitman maintained that, while the American position on gay rights differs from Kenya’s, the US respects Kenyan law and is in no way influencing a change in perception in the country.

“Countries have their differences, we have a very strong working relationship of many years and I think the Kenyan government probably knows the US perceptive, in fact I know they do, but we also respect Kenya’s rights on this particular issue,” she said.

“I want to underscore that there is absolutely no linkage at all between the food and drought relief and Kenyan’s stance on LGBTQ.”

The US envoy went on to reiterate the American position on LGBTQ rights, stating that their rights were respected in the same way that human rights were.

She did, however, clarify that the US exerted no pressure on other countries with opposing opinions.
