Amorim after Derby Loss: I am not Changing my Philosophy

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has insisted he will not abandon his philosophy despite overseeing the club’s worst start to a league campaign in more than three decades.

United were dismantled 3-0 by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, with Phil Foden’s first-half header opening the scoring before Erling Haaland struck twice after the break to seal a comprehensive derby victory.

The result leaves United with just four points from their opening four games, matching their 1992–93 slump, and bottom of the Premier League’s all-time “ever-present” table since Amorim’s appointment last November. His record now stands at only eight wins from 31 league matches.

Among managers to take charge of 20 or more league fixtures at the club, only Alfred Albut and Scott Duncan have worse win ratios than Amorim’s 26 percent. But the Portuguese coach remains adamant that he will not change.

“I accept it is not a record you should have at Manchester United,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “But I am not going to change my philosophy. I play my way, and I am going to play my way. While I’m here, I’ll do my best. The rest is not my decision.”

United captain Bruno Fernandes echoed his manager’s frustrations, insisting the goals conceded were preventable. “The result is very bad for us, but the goals could have been avoided,” he said. “We were brave on the ball and created chances, but we were not clinical enough.”

For Amorim, the challenge is clear: maintain his belief while trying to turn results around. But with United languishing near the bottom and fans growing restless, patience at Old Trafford is running out.
