Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has expressed optimism that club captain Bruno Fernandes will remain at Old Trafford despite mounting speculation over a potential big money move to Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal.
Speaking after United’s 3-1 comeback victory against Hong Kong in their final post-season friendly, Amorim said he believes the 30-year-old Portuguese playmaker is committed to the club’s rebuilding efforts. “I don’t think so, I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think so,” Amorim responded when asked if Fernandes had played his final game in a United shirt. “He sees us taking some actions to change things… I think he wants to stay.”
Fernandes played a lively first half in front of a 40,000-strong crowd at the Hong Kong Stadium—approximately 85% full—before being substituted. His performance included a missed opportunity when one-on-one with the goalkeeper, opting for flair over precision on a slick, rain-soaked pitch.
Teenage substitute Chido Obi stole the spotlight in the second half, scoring twice with a clever finish and a glancing header. Ayden Heaven sealed the result with a late header, giving United a positive end to a disappointing tour and season. The match came days after the team was booed off in Malaysia, highlighting the pressure on Amorim after a dismal 15th-place Premier League finish.
Other key players, including Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho, who is also the subject of transfer rumors, Casemiro, and Rasmus Højlund, featured in the starting lineup. Amad Diallo, who recently drew criticism for a gesture toward fans in Kuala Lumpur, also came on in the second half.
Despite the win, the club faces significant challenges ahead. Amorim’s top priority will be keeping hold of Fernandes, who has been United’s creative engine and spiritual leader during turbulent times.
“I talk with him, I explained some things,” Amorim added. “And I just have that feeling when you talk to someone, you know if they want to stay.”
Fernandes’s future now hangs in the balance as United enter a critical offseason of change and renewal.
