Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has urged his players and fans to stay “calm” following last weekend’s morale-boosting victory over Liverpool, as the team prepares for another tough Premier League clash against Brighton.
United claimed their first win at Anfield since 2016 after Harry Maguire’s late header sealed a dramatic 2-1 triumph, marking the first time Amorim has recorded back-to-back league victories since taking charge.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, the Portuguese coach welcomed the positive momentum but cautioned against overexcitement. “We use the good spirit of winning games,” Amorim said.
“We know that was a good weekend for us, but our focus is on the next game. If Gakpo’s header had gone 20 centimetres the other way, the narrative would be completely different. So I just want to maintain some calm and direction in what we are doing.”
Amorim, who has faced scrutiny during a mixed start to his tenure, stressed the importance of consistency at a club of United’s stature.
“There are doubts if you are a manager in this kind of club, you don’t win a lot of games, people are going to doubt you,” he noted. “We need to be clear on our path and not change so much because we win one game.”
United, currently ninth in the table, sit just one place and one point above Brighton, who have proven a difficult opponent in recent years. The Seagulls have won six of their last eight encounters with United, including three straight victories at Old Trafford.
“They are a really complete team,” Amorim acknowledged. “We need to be smart and focused on everything we do.”
Saturday’s match will also mark a personal milestone for captain Bruno Fernandes, who is set to make his 300th appearance for the club. Amorim praised the midfielder’s leadership and character, saying Fernandes had “surprised” him since their partnership began.
“Everything you read about the players is not always what you find,” Amorim said. “His frustration comes from wanting to help, sometimes not in the best way, but it comes from a good place.
He takes every loss personally, as you should as a captain. He’s a great leader and a great footballer.”
United will hope to maintain their winning form and continue climbing the table when they face Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday.
