Kirinyaga county governor Ann Waiguru named county education CEC James Kinyua Mutugi as her running mate on Tuesday.
While unveiling him, Waiguru described Mutugi as a diligent achiever and a civil servant who has demonstrated illustriousness in his current capacity.
According to Waiguru, the appointment will help strike gender and more so regional balance in the leadership positions.
Mutugi comes from Mwea West substituting Peter Ndambiri from Mwea East who is deputizing Charles Kibiru of Jubilee party.
While speaking in Wamumu, Waiguru expressed confidence in Mutugi’s ability to serve as deputy governor if they win the county’s top seats.
Mutugi was the MCA for Wamumu Ward from 2013 to 2017, so he has some political experience now that Waiguru has elevated him to be the second in command if they win the gubernatorial election in August.
He expressed his appreciation for the appointment and promised to remain loyal to the governor while demonstrating servanthood and result-oriented leadership.
Waiguru’s pick of Mutugi comes after a squabble with Peter Ndambiri, who has been deputising her since 2017.
The race for Kirinyaga gubernatorial office has taken shape, with serious contenders including former governor Peter Nduathi, woman representative Waingui Ngirici, who will run on an independent ticket after abandoning Jubilee and has chosen Peter Wanjao as her running mate and Jubilee candidate Charles Kibiru.
