Anti-Riot Police Deployed as Alliance Girls Alumni Protest Over Teacher Misconduct Allegations

Tensions flared outside Alliance Girls High School on Thursday as alumni staged a protest over alleged long-standing misconduct by a teacher, demanding urgent reforms and accountability. The demonstration, held despite a heavy police presence, was organized by former students who accused the school and education authorities of inaction.

The protest follows an explosive exposé by Africa Uncensored journalist and alumna Christine Mungai, who detailed troubling allegations against teacher Peter Ayiro. Mungai reported that Ayiro had inappropriate emotional and, in some cases, physical interactions with students and former students, raising alarm over the safety of learners and institutional complicity.

“Our earlier demands to the school and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) have not been met. We are here to ask why,” said one of the protesting alumnae. The alumni body claims their protest notice was ignored, leaving them with no formal recourse.

“They left us with no legal path to speak out… so we did what survivors and allies have always done: we showed up anyway,” read a statement from the Alliance Girls Alumni Association.

According to the group, the issue extends beyond Ayiro and reflects a systemic failure. They allege that for decades, predators have been shielded by silence and disguised as mentors in a system that values institutional reputation over student safety.

The alumni have issued a list of five key demands:

  1. Immediate removal of Peter Ayiro from all educational roles, especially at Alliance Girls.
  2. A public statement of accountability from the Board of Management, TSC, and the Ministry of Education.
  3. An independent, survivor-informed investigation into the alleged abuse and institutional responses.
  4. Temporary suspension of all staff implicated in safeguarding failures, pending investigations.
  5. Comprehensive safeguarding reforms, including external reporting channels, trauma-informed care, and survivor support.

The Africa Uncensored article revealed that despite persistent allegations, Ayiro retained a prominent role at the school and within its Christian Union (C.U.). It also noted that in 2021, rumors of an affair with a former student were reported to his church community, led by his father, yet no disciplinary action followed.

As the protest continues to draw national attention, pressure mounts on education authorities to address the allegations decisively and transparently. The Ministry of Education and the TSC have yet to release a formal response.
