Safaricom Ethiopia CEO Anwar Soussa Steps Down

Anwar Soussa, Chief Executive Officer of Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC (STEP), will leave the company when his secondment ends on July 31, 2023.

Anwar joined Safaricom Ethiopia in August 2021 to lead the organization’s formation, establish business operations, and build a high-quality network.

As the first CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, Anwar oversaw the achievement of significant milestones in a fast-paced environment, such as onboarding the team and successfully launching commercial operations of Ethiopia’s second telecommunications operator.

Safaricom PLC CEO Peter Ndegwa said Anwar’s commitment has been instrumental in the growth and expansion of Safaricom into Ethiopia.

“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Anwar for his leadership and contributions to Safaricom Ethiopia. Throughout his tenure he has demonstrated unwavering passion and commitment, which have played a crucial role in our achievements thus far. We will announce Anwar’s successor in due course.”

Anwar has led Safaricom Ethiopia to over 4 million customers, with the network now reaching more than 25% of the population and spanning 50 cities/towns.

Under Anwar’s leadership, Safaricom Ethiopia also secured a mobile financial services licence, paving the way for the launch of M-PESA services.
