In a move aimed at ensuring the safety of all candidates doing their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education in Lamu County, the government has deployed Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) to assist in securing the exams.
The county which is faced with threats of Al-Shabaab attacks.
According to Coast Regional commissioner John Elungata they are working under a multi-agency consisting all security departments to ensure the safety of exams, centers, invigilators, supervisors, and students.
Speaking at Kakoneni girls’ secondary school in Malindi sub-County of Kilifi County during the beginning of the nationwide examinations Elungata said the KDF will help in the movement of the examinations and its personnel, particularly in Lamu east which is at risk of attacks.
He said examination centers are safe all over the region including those which have security issues and assured everyone that the excursive will run smoothly.
“Lamu East KDF is giving us support, supporting our police officers and ourselves to deliver the exams and ensure exams are administered and returned to the containers,” he said.
The Regional Commissioner said there has been no incident so far relating to exam or candidate safety.
He said they would be able to assess as the day goes by but expressed confidence with the plans in place that the exam will be administered to the very end without any hitch.
In the entire region, he said there are 52, 015 candidates out of which girls are 25,864 while boys are 26,151.
“So, we have more girls than boys in this examination which is a good thing, like the county commissioner you had him mention that the fight for the protection of the girlchild is bearing fruits,” he said.
Elungata said they have witnessed many girls sitting for their examinations healthy with no cases of them expecting children which means they have an assurance of having both boys and girls of the future.
The RC promised to reward the top girl candidate at Kakoneni girls secondary school Sh. 50,000 for excelling in the KCSE.
He said they would like to see the examination retain its integrity since the start of the multi-agency sector.
Elungata also encouraged students to believe in themselves as what the teachers gave them was sufficient to enable them to excel.
The regional commissioner was accompanied by Regional Police commander Gabriel Musau, regional education Director TSC Victoria Muoka, and Kilifi County commissioner Kutswa Olaka.
Kakoneni girls had 179 candidates sitting for their KCSE.
The County commissioner on his part urged them to work well and smart so as to excel and shall get good jobs.
“When you are going to the exams take a minute or two to pray to God so that he can guide you,” he said.
