Kenyan artist Arrowbwoy has released a powerful new single titled Mapambano, inspired by his personal experience with police brutality during the June 25 anti-government protests.
In an emotional Instagram post, Arrowbwoy revealed he “never thought he would be a victim of police brutality,” recounting how he was allegedly assaulted by police despite surrendering with his hands raised.
The viral footage of the incident — showing him being whipped during the Gen Z-led anniversary demonstrations — has sparked outrage and galvanized support.
Mapambano captures the pain and frustration of many Kenyans. Through raw, poignant lyrics, Arrowbwoy addresses police killings, bribery, corruption, media suppression, internet blackouts, and the growing disconnect between political elites and the suffering masses.
“Our leaders live in luxury while wananchi hustle to survive,” he sings. The track calls out impunity and delivers a fiery message: “We will no longer be ruled by fear.”
Arrowbwoy’s lyrics rally everyday Kenyans — from mama mboga to boda boda riders, and especially Gen Z — to stay alert and united. “Bado ni mapambano” (the struggle continues) becomes both a slogan and a warning.
Online, Mapambano is already striking a chord.
“Arrowboy thank you for this masterpiece. We shall have our country back,” wrote @stifflah1kymkym261.
“Tusilale bado ni mapambano… bila uoga, sisi ni marasta wa Kenya,” added @brendankatha.
“Real message! Gen Z ndio hii motivation,” echoed @Michaelpopi.
Arrowbwoy had joined the peaceful protest in remembrance of those killed during last year’s demonstrations. When chaos erupted, he became yet another face of the brutality that continues to plague the country.
