Arsenal have confirmed the blockbuster signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP in a deal worth up to €73.5 million (£63.4 million).
The agreement includes an initial fee of €63.5 million plus a further €10 million in performance-related add-ons, making the 26-year-old the club’s marquee acquisition of the summer transfer window.
Gyökeres, who scored a staggering 39 goals last season in Liga Portugal, played a crucial role in delivering the league title to Sporting. His Champions League hat trick against Manchester City also made headlines, triggering a wave of interest across Europe before Arsenal won the race for his signature.
The forward will wear the iconic No. 14 shirt—once donned by Thierry Henry—and is set to join the Gunners in Asia for preseason preparations. His debut could come as early as July 31 against North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a friendly match.
“We’re so pleased with the excellent deal we have completed to bring Viktor to the club,” said Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta. “He’s an exceptional talent who fits our vision perfectly.”
Manager Mikel Arteta praised Gyökeres’ qualities, calling him a “quick and powerful presence” with “incredible goalscoring numbers at club and international levels.”
Gyökeres becomes Arsenal’s second confirmed signing in three days, following the capture of Spanish defender Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia. The pair joins Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Christian Nørgaard as part of Arsenal’s ambitious rebuild.
With high expectations and a massive price tag, Gyökeres will be expected to lead the line and fire Arsenal to silverware in the 2025/26 campaign.
