The Kenya Editors’ Guild (KEG) has called for an immediate investigation into the shocking murder of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif.
Sharif was killed by police on Sunday night in Kajiado after being mistaken for a thief who had allegedly stolen a car in the area.
KEG president Churchill Otieno, in a statement issued on Monday, demanded a thorough investigation into why the celebrated journalist was killed, as well as the arrest of those responsible.
He also stated that a thorough investigation would show Kenya’s investigative muscle and reassure Kenyans and global citizens of the country’s safety.
“While we wait for all details on the killing, the Kenya Editors’ Guild calls upon the Government to quickly and thoroughly investigate the case to determine the cause and reason of the killing and bring those responsible to book,” read part of the statement.
“This would not only demonstrate Kenya’s and the government’s ability to protect its citizens and visitors but also assure Kenyans and the international community that Kenya is safe for everyone, including journalists whose rights it should protect.”
KEG has also expressed condolences to Mr. Shariff’s family, colleagues, and loved ones.
