The chairperson of the Atheists in Kenya Society, Harrison Nyende Mumia, has been charged at the Milimani Law Courts with multiple counts of false publication under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act.
According to the charge sheet, Mumia is accused of knowingly publishing false information on social media on December 30, 2025, using Facebook and Instagram accounts allegedly linked to him.
Prosecutors claim the posts involved images of William Ruto portrayed as critically ill or deceased, information the State says was false.
The prosecution alleges that the publications were made using a Facebook account under the name “Robinson Kipruto Ngetich” and an Instagram account bearing the name “Harrison Mumia,” in violation of Section 22(1) of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018.
Court documents indicate that the accused was arrested on January 2, 2026, and presented before court on January 5, 2026.
Investigations in the matter are being handled by the Serious Crimes Unit at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, with digital forensic experts listed among the prosecution witnesses.
Mumia denied the charges when they were read to him.
The court released him on a bond of Ksh1 million or an alternative cash bail of Ksh500,000, pending further proceedings.
