Atletico Madrid have agreed a deal with Brazilian club Botafogo to sign Argentina international and 2022 World Cup winner Thiago Almada, the Spanish side confirmed on Tuesday.
The transfer is subject to the 24-year-old passing a medical and signing his contract, Atletico announced in a statement posted on social media.
Almada, a dynamic attacking midfielder, spent the second half of last season on loan at French side Lyon, where he scored two goals and provided five assists in 20 appearances across all competitions.
Capped 10 times by Argentina, Almada was a member of the squad that lifted the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022 and also featured for his country in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The right-footed playmaker began his professional career with Argentine club Vélez Sarsfield in 2018 at the age of 17, before making a high-profile move to Major League Soccer side Atlanta United in 2022. He was named MLS Rookie of the Year in his debut season, showcasing the talent that later earned him a switch to Botafogo in 2023.
Almada’s impending arrival at Atletico Madrid marks another key signing as the La Liga side looks to reinforce its midfield ahead of the upcoming season.
