AU Picks Djibouti’s Ambassador as Special Envoy to Help Restore Constitutional Order in Madagascar

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has appointed Ambassador Mohamed Idris Farah as the AU Special Envoy to the Republic of Madagascar. Ambassador Farah currently serves as Senior Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations of the Republic of Djibouti.

A seasoned diplomat with decades of experience, Ambassador Farah is widely respected for his deep understanding of Pan-African diplomacy, conflict resolution, and mediation.

He previously served as Djibouti’s Permanent Representative to the African Union for more than a decade, during which he also held the title of Overall Dean of African Ambassadors.

Farah was a member of the AU High-Level Panel on the Ethiopian Peace Process for the Tigray region between 2022 and 2023.

The appointment follows resolutions adopted during the 1305th and 1306th meetings of the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) held in October 2025, which outlined a roadmap to address the ongoing political tensions in Madagascar.

As Special Envoy, Ambassador Farah is mandated to engage with government officials, youth leaders, civil society, and regional stakeholders to promote inclusive dialogue and national reconciliation.

His role will focus on fostering consensus and supporting the peaceful restoration of constitutional order in Madagascar.

The AU Chairperson expressed confidence in Farah’s ability to advance the organization’s objectives, citing his proven leadership and familiarity with the AU’s conflict prevention mechanisms.

“The Chairperson expresses full support to Ambassador Farah and calls upon all Malagasy stakeholders, regional actors, and partners to cooperate with him,” the AU said in a statement.

The appointment underscores the AU’s ongoing commitment to promoting peace, dialogue, and democratic stability across the African continent.
