AU Welcomes Appointment of Dr. Kamil Idris as Sudan’s New Prime Minister

The African Union Commission has welcomed the appointment of H.E. Dr. Kamil al-Tayeb Idris as the new Prime Minister of the Republic of Sudan, hailing it as a positive step toward inclusive governance and national stability.

In a statement issued Monday, AU Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed optimism that Dr. Idris’s leadership will help advance efforts to restore constitutional order and democratic governance in Sudan.

“This development marks a crucial step toward inclusive, civilian-led transition that reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people,” said Youssouf.

The AU urged all Sudanese stakeholders to intensify dialogue and cooperation toward a peaceful transition, adding that the Commission remains ready to support Sudan alongside regional and international partners.

Dr. Idris, a seasoned diplomat and international law expert, brings decades of experience from his time at the UN’s World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), where he served as Director General from 1997 to 2008.

His prior roles in Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomatic missions position him as a respected figure in both domestic and international arenas.

While the Sovereignty Council — the country’s transitional presidential body — has the power to appoint the Prime Minister, the role is separate and tasked with overseeing the day-to-day operations of government.

The African Union reiterated its unwavering commitment to Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and long-term stability, emphasizing the need for a durable political solution that guarantees peace, development, and democracy for all Sudanese.
