Australian Investor Loses KSh77 Million in Nairobi Gold Scam, Left Stranded Amid Probe

An Australian investor has been left stranded in Nairobi after losing more than KSh77 million in a sophisticated international gold scam that has exposed the scale and complexity of fraud networks operating across the region.

A complaint filed with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) details how a syndicate posing as lawyers, brokers and logistics agents orchestrated an elaborate scheme involving fake gold, forged insurance documents and sham storage facilities.

The victim, Andrew Adel Gaballa, was initially lured into the deal with promises of acquiring 600 kilograms of gold destined for Dubai. The operation, however, quickly unravelled into a web of deception spanning multiple countries, including Kenya, Tanzania and the United Arab Emirates.

According to the complaint, Gaballa was introduced to the deal by American intermediaries, who connected him to a Kenyan contact, Duncan Okonji.

The parties travelled to Mwanza, Tanzania, where the supposed transaction was formalised. Under the arrangement, 10 kilograms of gold would be held as collateral while the remaining 590 kilograms would be shipped to Dubai.

To reinforce the illusion, the syndicate allegedly staged convincing demonstrations, complete with documentation and processing activities designed to mimic legitimate gold trade operations.

“This was a very elaborate case that was planned well. My client was taken through what appeared to be genuine operations, but in the end, no product was delivered and the money disappeared,” said Nabeel Khan, Gaballa’s representative.

The collateral was later presented in Nairobi’s Kilimani area, where small pellets believed to be gold were melted in what is now suspected to have been a staged exercise aimed at convincing the investor of the deal’s authenticity.

Gaballa went on to make multiple payments, including KSh63.9 million for insurance through a law firm, KSh1.2 million in legal fees, KSh5.1 million in cryptocurrency transfers, and KSh
