Australian PM Condemns US Police For Shooting Journalist With A Rubber Bullet

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has strongly condemned the shooting of Nine News US correspondent Lauren Tomasi, who was struck by a rubber bullet while reporting on the escalating protests in Los Angeles over the weekend.

Describing the incident as “horrific,” Albanese addressed the matter at the National Press Club on Tuesday, affirming that the Australian government had formally raised concerns with the Trump administration following the incident.

“She was clearly identified. There was no ambiguity,” said Albanese, emphasizing the importance of protecting journalists on duty.

“We don’t find it acceptable that it occurred, and we think that the role of the media is particularly important.”

Footage broadcast by Nine News captured the moment Tomasi, standing in downtown Los Angeles, was delivering a live report with police activity visible behind her.

Suddenly, a loud bang was heard, and Tomasi screamed in pain after being struck by a rubber bullet—believed to have been fired by police officers dispersing the crowd.

The clip was quickly cut, but the incident sparked widespread outrage on social media and among press freedom advocates.

Albanese confirmed he had personally spoken to Tomasi earlier in the day.

“She told me she was sore but otherwise unharmed,” he noted.

This latest episode comes amid growing international concern over the U.S. government’s handling of the protests and the deployment of military forces, including Marines and National Guard troops, to quell unrest in cities like Los Angeles.

Albanese’s intervention highlights the diplomatic tension unfolding between the U.S. and its allies, as the Trump administration faces criticism for its use of force, particularly against journalists and peaceful demonstrators.

Tomasi is one of several journalists reportedly injured during the third consecutive night of protest in Los Angeles, which has been declared an unlawful assembly zone by local police.

The protests, initially sparked by opposition to President Trump’s immigration policy, have intensified following violent confrontations with law enforcement.

Media rights groups have condemned the attacks, calling for an investigation and for all parties to respect the role of the press during public demonstrations.
