Human rights activist and Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid has confirmed that an autopsy conducted on the body of Jidah Burka, who was fatally shot during Sunday’s chaos at Kasarani Stadium, revealed that she died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
According to Khalid, the bullet entered from the front and exited through the back, indicating a direct shot. He added that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has taken over investigations into the fatal shooting.
Burka’s body has since been released to her family, and her burial was scheduled for Tuesday at Kariakor Muslim Cemetery.
“We thank the Sonko Rescue Team for stepping in to clear all the hospital and mortuary bills,” Khalid said in a statement posted online.
Burka was among at least five people who died after police opened fire and released tear gas to disperse mourners attempting to access the VIP viewing chamber where the late Raila Odinga’s body was being held. Witnesses said panic erupted as crowds surged toward the entrance, triggering a violent police response.
Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah said more than 40 people were injured and are receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital, describing the tragedy as a “preventable humanitarian disaster.” He called for an immediate review of police crowd-control procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
