Police investigating the April 6 murder of June Jerop, a Kenyatta University student who was allegedly on a coffee date, revealed that they were following a lead that would connect the main suspect and one of her colleagues at her workplace.
Speaking to the media, Makadara sub-county police commander Judith Nyongesa revealed that the 36-year-old was communicating with two men on the evening she vanished.
The colleague was also arrested as a person of interest in the case as police continued to investigate the murder in order to determine the killer’s motive.
Further, the colleague was said to be related to the main suspect in the murder. Police, on the other hand, remained tight-lipped about the report, declining to confirm whether the two were connected.
“The movements and the connections of the phones reveal that they were together all the time, and that is what led us to arrest the main suspect,” the police stated.
Jerop’s sister, Joyce Jepkemoi, on the other hand, maintained that they were suspicious of the connection between the main suspect and some of her sister’s colleagues, even as they urged the police to expedite their investigations.
“The suspect is coincidentally a relative of one of her colleagues. For us, it is really raising a lot of eyebrows,” she stated.
Jerop was found murdered next to Jamhuri Primary School, which is next to Ngong Road, on Monday, March 20.
The 36-year-old was seen on CCTV at a chemist in South B and Imara Daima with the main suspect, who was driving a black Mercedes Benz.
Police tracked their last phone signals at Mavoko before they went dark.
The main suspect was apprehended near the Industrial area after travelling from his hometown of Bungoma County.
His blood-splattered car was later recovered from his Bungoma home. Samples were taken from the vehicles to determine whose blood it was.
According to the autopsy on Jerop’s body, the 36-year-old died of excessive bleeding following a stabbing.
