Award-Winning Traffic Cop Turns Garissa Into a Model of Road Safety

Inspector Kennedy Njuguna Muchoki, the Base Commander for Garissa Township, has been crowned Traffic Base Commander of the Year at the prestigious AA Road Safety Excellence Awards held on July 4, 2025, at Pullman Hotel, Nairobi.

The award, organized by AA Kenya, recognizes outstanding individuals and institutions transforming Kenya’s road safety landscape.

Inspector Njuguna emerged top among a competitive group of nominees, applauded for his innovative, people-first approach to traffic management, particularly in high-pressure and underserved regions.

Since his appointment in Garissa, Inspector Njuguna has become known for his daily road safety sensitisation meetings, engagement with boda boda and tuk-tuk operators, and consistent collaboration with transport stakeholders.

His leadership has been credited with reshaping traffic discipline and promoting a culture of shared responsibility on the road.

Dignitaries present at the ceremony included Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi, NTSA Director General George Njao, and NPS Deputy Commandant Traffic, CP Kipkemoi Kirui, who all commended the officer’s service and impact.

The award further cements Njuguna’s reputation as a rising star within the National Police Service.

Behind the accolades is a compelling story. Born and raised in Murang’a County, Njuguna was an A-student who turned down conventional career paths to pursue policing—a decision that surprised many.

After earning a degree in Criminology from MMUST and graduating from Kiganjo in 2018, he steadily rose through the ranks from Kakamega to Bungoma, and later to Malindi, where he led rescue efforts during the Shakahola cult operation.

From a humble childhood to national recognition, Inspector Njuguna’s journey is a classic grass-to-grace story; one built on integrity, hard work, and an unshakable commitment to serve. His win is not just personal—it is a symbol of what is possible when duty meets purpose.
