Awoniyi Undergoes Emergency Surgery After Collision in Forest-Leicester Clash

Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, was rushed to hospital for emergency abdominal surgery following an injury sustained during Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Leicester City at the City Ground.

The Nigerian international suffered the injury after colliding with a post while attempting to convert a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga. Despite receiving medical attention on the pitch and briefly continuing to play, the true extent of the injury was only discovered on Monday, prompting immediate surgical intervention. The procedure was successful, and the injury is not believed to be life-threatening.

The incident drew a furious reaction from Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, who stormed onto the pitch after the final whistle to confront head coach Nuno Espirito Santo. Marinakis reportedly questioned the decision to keep Awoniyi on the field despite visible distress and medical consultations during stoppage time.

The match was a setback for Forest, whose hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League took a serious hit. Sitting seventh in the table, one point behind the top five, Forest now relies on other results to secure qualification with just two matches remaining, against West Ham and top five contenders Chelsea. However, the club is guaranteed a place in the UEFA Conference League, marking their first European appearance since the 1995–96 season.
