Azimio la Umoja on Thursday, April 6, resolved to eject nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege as its Minority Whip in the National Assembly.
The decision was reached during the Azimio la Umoja Parliamentary Group Meeting that was held in Machakos County.
However, the coalition did not immediately replace the former Murang’a Woman Representative in the highly-contested position.
Sabina’s demotion came just hours after Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader Raila Odinga proposed a change in the law to punish rebellious leaders.
According to Kathiani Member of Parliament Robert Mbui, Sabina was de-whipped after meeting with President William Ruto at State House recently.
Mbui has claimed that a meeting will be held so as to come up with suitable action against Sabina and the other MPs who accompanied her to the State House.
“It’s a no-brainer. Sabina Chege is the current deputy whip in the Azimio la Umoja coalition. So if she has gone to work with Kenya Kwanza how is she going to whip us? Whipping in the house means that we want the position of our coalition to be supported.”
Sabina had long been chastised for declaring her support for the Kenya Kwanza administration during her visit to the State House on January 28, 2023.
During the meeting, Sabina urged citizens to support President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as Mount Kenya’s Kingpin.
“When we support Gachagua from the ground then he will be much respected even up there. You all know I was an Azimio diehard but just as I respect leadership, I also respect the decisions you made through your votes and that’s why you saw me in State House the other day,” she implored.
