Kennedy Ng’ondi, an Azimio candidate, is the new speaker-elect of the Nairobi City County National Assembly.
County Assembly clerk Edward Gichana declared him the winner after he won the second round of voting with 68 votes to Hassan Robow’s 55.
During the second round of voting, the two-thirds constitutional requirement did not apply because the winner was declared based on a simple majority of the total votes cast.
In the first round, County Assembly clerk Edward Gichana announced that none of the two attained two-thirds which is 82.
The speaker-elect had won the first round, garnering 71 votes against Robow’s 52votes. However, he did not garner two-thirds of the votes cast.
He now becomes the fourth assembly speaker after his predecessor Benson Mutura.
“Having attained the majority requirement, I declare Kennedy Ng’ondi as the next County Assembly speaker,” announced Clerk Edward Gichana.
Ng’ondi was the late Alex Magelo’s deputy speaker from 2013 to 2017.
His first order of business will be to preside over the inauguration of his deputy speaker.
He is now the fourth assembly speaker, succeeding Benson Mutura.
Clerk Gichana ordered that the ballot papers be sealed for six months.
