A motorist driving near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park had a Wednesday morning commute unlike any other when a bald eagle dropped a cat from the sky, shattering her windshield in an event so bizarre it required a reassuring 911 dispatcher.
The incident occurred on U.S. Route 74 in Swain County, North Carolina. In a recorded 911 call, the incredulous driver reported, “You may not believe me, but I just had a bald eagle drop a cat through my windshield. It absolutely shattered my windshield.”
The dispatcher’s response was as notable as the report itself. “OK. I do believe you, honestly,” the dispatcher said before laughing, immediately validating the driver’s extraordinary story and adding, “Oh my goodness. Let’s see. I’ve heard crazier.”
The driver, who escaped injury, confirmed the event was witnessed by another motorist, who called it “the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.” It remains unclear whether the eagle lost its grip on the feline or simply decided it wasn’t to its taste mid-flight.
