Banned film Rafiki to premier on DsTV Box Office in all countries, except Kenya

The controversial film Rafiki, continues to scale higher in the arts and film industry after the DSTV announced its premiere on the premium video streaming platform, DSTV Box Office.

Announcing on her social media, the Film’s creator, Wanuri Kahiu broke the news to fans worldwide and Kenyans would miss out on the show.

The Oscar nominated film that plays out a story behind a gay couple and the challenges they face in their love life amidst societal condemnation towards LGBT rights in Kenya.

The film was banned by Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) director Ezekiel Mutua, who claimed the film was sponsored to erode moral values that are against same-sex marriage.

The KFCB ban, that was thought to pose a challenge to the success of the film, became the stepping stone to its success. The film has bagged several awards in international spaces such as; AFI Fest, Bratislava International Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival and NewFest: New York’s LGBT Film Festival just to mention a few.
