Barcelona Star De Jong Pours Cold Water On Manchester United Rumour

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has responded to speculations linking him with a transfer to Manchester United ahead of the upcoming season.

The rumours began doing rounds after the English Premier League club named Erik ten Hag of the Netherlands as their new manager.

Erik ten Hag and De Jong had a strong working relationship at Ajax, where they famously reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2018/19, and the Dutch coach is reportedly eager to reunite with his former midfield metronome.

However, during an action for his country against Poland in a Nations League encounter on Saturday, De Jong was asked about reports linking him with a move to Manchester United after the game.

The 25-year-old laughed at the question and said he “can’t say” anything right now.

De Jong had previously dismissed reports linking him with a move to Manchester United, claiming that Barcelona was his dream club and that he would like to stay with them.

De Jong’s latest response to transfer rumours, though, has fueled speculation that the midfielder could well be considering a move to Man Utd.

The new Manchester United manager is set to overhaul his squad this summer as the club looks to put last season’s debacle behind them, in which interim manager Ralf Rangnick guided them to their lowest-ever Premier League points tally, 58, finishing sixth.

The Netherlands international is Erik ten Hag’s top target to bolster the Red Devils’ midfield, though the Catalan giants are believed to be holding out for as much as £70million – roughly the same fee they paid to Ajax three years ago.
