Bayern Munich One Win Away from Bundesliga Glory After Mainz Thrashing

Bayern Munich moved to within touching distance of reclaiming the Bundesliga title with a commanding 3-0 win over Mainz at the Allianz Arena.

Vincent Kompany’s side made the breakthrough through Leroy Sane, who calmly slotted home from close range. Michael Olise doubled the lead before half-time, cutting inside and firing low past Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner.

Eric Dier added a third late on, heading in from an Olise corner to seal a dominant display for the hosts.

Bayern would have clinched the title on Saturday had Bayer Leverkusen dropped points, but Xabi Alonso’s men maintained an eight-point gap at the top with a 2-0 win over Augsburg.

Mainz had opportunities to get back into the match, with Nadiem Amiri forcing a fine save from Jonas Urbig. However, Bayern were largely in control, with Sane twice going close to adding to the scoreline – striking the post with a delicate chip after bending another effort narrowly wide.

Veteran forward Thomas Müller made his 500th Bundesliga appearance, coming on late in what will be one of his final games for Bayern before he departs this summer.

Victory for Bayern away at RB Leipzig next Saturday (14:30 BST) would secure their 33rd Bundesliga title, restoring their dominance after Leverkusen’s surprise triumph last season.
