Panic gripped a daycare center in Kathangariri, Embu North Sub-County, after a swarm of bees attacked children and their caregiver on Friday morning, leaving several hospitalized.
According to reports, the incident occurred at around 10:00 a.m. while the preschool children were playing outside. The caregiver, identified as Grace Karimi, sustained multiple stings as she tried to shield the children from the aggressive insects.
Medical officials confirmed that nine people were affected, including children aged between one and three years.
Five were treated and discharged shortly after, while four children and Karimi were admitted at Granton and Polly Private Hospital for observation. Doctors say their condition has since stabilised.
Parents expressed concern following the incident, with some noting it was not the first time bees had invaded the facility. They urged local authorities to take measures to eliminate the threat and enhance safety in the area.
The incident highlights ongoing risks posed by unmanaged bee colonies near learning institutions in the region.
