Blogger Billy Mwangi has officially thrown his hat into the ring for the Embu County senatorial seat in the upcoming 2027 General Election.
Billy Mwangi is aligning himself with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s ‘One-Term’ Movement, which seeks to block President William Ruto’s re-election.
Mwangi, 24, who gained national attention following his abduction in December 2024 and subsequent return after 15 days in custody, made the announcement in Majengo Estate, Embu Town, where he emotionally reunited with his mother, Regina Wairimu, earlier this year.
“I will stand up for the youth, for free speech, and for justice. I ask the people of Embu to support my bid so that we can bring accountability and courage to the Senate,” Billy declared to a cheering crowd.
The former college student has built a following among Generation Z activists and freedom of expression advocates. His dramatic disappearance and return sparked nationwide protests and increased scrutiny of the government’s handling of dissent.
Billy’s political entry sets up a fierce three-way battle in Embu’s Senate race. He will face incumbent Senator Alexander Mundigi and political heavyweight Justin Muturi, the former Attorney General and Cabinet Secretary, who is rumored to be making a political comeback.
Embu County, currently under the leadership of Governor Cecily Mbarire, has traditionally leaned pro-government, but Billy’s candidacy may shake the region’s political status quo.
As a declared supporter of Gachagua’s anti-Ruto platform, Billy’s campaign is likely to amplify calls for youth inclusion, decentralized power, and freedom of expression—themes resonating with Kenya’s increasingly vocal younger generation.
“They tried to silence me, but I came back louder. My voice is not mine alone—it belongs to every young Kenyan who wants change,” Billy concluded.
