Bomet Accident Death Toll Rises To 15: Transport CS Chirchir Visits Casualties

The death toll from Saturday’s horrific road accident at Cheptangulgei area along the Kaplong-Kericho road in Bomet County has risen to 15, authorities have confirmed.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, who led a delegation to St. Claire’s Kaplong Mission Hospital, confirmed the figures after visiting survivors of the grisly crash. Eleven people remain hospitalized with serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment.

Chirchir was accompanied by Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok, Sotik MP Francis Sigei, and NTSA Chairman Khatib Mwashetani, who also met with families of the deceased and offered their condolences.

The tragic incident, which involved three vehicles, has left the nation in mourning and reignited calls for increased road safety awareness. The National Police Service released a statement extending their heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families while wishing a quick recovery to those injured.

“This tragic incident is a stark reminder of the importance of personal responsibility while on the road. Adherence to traffic rules is not optional—it is a matter of life and death,” the statement read.

Officials have urged all motorists and road users to exercise extreme caution, particularly regarding speed limits, overtaking rules, and vehicle maintenance.

As investigations into the cause of the crash continue, authorities stress the need for both enforcement and public cooperation in reducing road carnage across the country.

The accident has cast a dark cloud over Bomet County, with leaders calling for urgent steps to curb the alarming rate of road fatalities.
