Brentford revived their European hopes with a stunning 4-3 comeback win over a depleted Manchester United side at the Gtech Community Stadium in a dramatic Premier League encounter.
Mason Mount opened the scoring for United with just his second goal for the club, converting an Alejandro Garnacho cross to give the visitors the lead. But Brentford quickly responded, captain Mikkel Damsgaard’s cross taking a wicked deflection off Luke Shaw to level the scores.
Moments later, Kevin Schade made it 2-1 with a towering header, capitalising on chaos in the United defence as Matthijs de Ligt lay injured on the pitch—a moment that left United players fuming as play continued.
Schade grabbed his second in the 70th minute, nodding in from close range off a Bryan Mbeumo delivery, before Yoane Wissa made it four, finishing a slick Brentford move to stun the United backline.
Though late goals from Garnacho and substitute Amad Diallo gave United hope, Brentford held on through a tense finale.
The result leaves United 15th on 39 points, just three above the relegation zone with three games remaining, while Brentford climb to ninth, now firmly in the race for European football.
Manager Ruben Amorim’s biggest concern, however, may not be the result. Defender Matthijs de Ligt, just back from an ankle injury, pulled up with a suspected hamstring issue in the lead-up to Brentford’s second goal. With a Europa League semi-final looming on Thursday against Athletic Bilbao, his absence could be a major blow.
“I’m really concerned,” Amorim said post-match. “We didn’t just lose a game — we may have lost a key player for the rest of the season.”
