A major breakthrough has been recorded in the 13-year-old murder case of Agnes Wanjiru after a British national linked to her killing was arrested in the United Kingdom.

In a statement released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Saturday, the suspect was taken into custody by UK authorities and is scheduled to appear before a London court on 14th November 2025 for a bail hearing related to Kenya’s extradition request. A subsequent case management session has been set for 9th December 2025.

The arrest follows extensive coordination between Kenyan and British investigators and comes six weeks after the DPP formally initiated extradition proceedings to bring the suspect to Kenya to face justice.

According to the ODPP, the extradition process began on 16th September 2025, when a Nairobi court issued an arrest warrant for the suspect. On 9th October 2025, the DPP confirmed that all required extradition documents had been officially transmitted to the Office of the Attorney General for onward submission to UK authorities.

Agnes Wanjiru, a 21 year old mother and freelance hairdresser, was last seen alive on 31st March 2012 at the Lions Court Lodge in Nanyuki, where she was reportedly in the company of British soldiers. Her body was discovered two months later, on 5th June 2012, hidden in a septic tank at the same lodge. The brutal murder sparked national outrage and renewed calls for justice amid allegations of a cover up.

The DPP, in the statement, reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ensuring justice for Wanjiru and her family through close collaboration with international partners.

“This significant development marks an important step toward accountability in the 13 yearold case,” the statement read in part.

The ODPP’s Public Affairs and Corporate Communication Division emphasized that the office remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice, ensuring those responsible for Wanjiru’s death are held fully accountable.
