Kidnappings of children has become rampant in Bungoma County, with the minors being held hostage and then mysteriously released.
Two separate incidents have been reported in Kanduyi constituency in the last two weeks, in which children were abducted early in the morning on their way to school.
The abductions have frightened parents, who have urged police to act quickly and apprehend those responsible for the’regular’ captures.
Bungoma criminal investigations boss Joseph Ondoro said police have launched an investigation into the incidents.
“Unfortunately, no suspects have been apprehended, but we are working with boda boda operators to uncover the motive behind the kidnappings,” Mr Ondoro said, adding that they have received important leads.
He revealed that a 13-year-old boy was abducted near Uwanja Ndege on the outskirts of Bungoma town on Thursday morning.
“We are waiting for the boy to recover from his shock so that he can volunteer information that will lead to the arrest of the abductors,” Mr Ondoro explained.
According to the minor’s mother, Ms Millicent Makokha, he was still in shock and feared disclosing any information.
A Good Samaritan later discovered him unconscious in a ditch at Chebukwa in Kabuchai constituency at midday, about 10 kilometers from their home.
She claimed that the Samaritan brought him home before transporting him to Bungoma Referral Hospital, where he is being treated.
A Grade Five student was recently abducted, drugged, and dumped on the side of the road.
Parents and residents have asked police to increase patrols, particularly in the morning, in order to reduce the rising number of incidents of insecurity.
