A Burundian national operating as a hawker in Kenya has been arraigned in court after being arrested along Ngara Railways in possession of 31 assorted mobile phones.
Nibitanga Jean Claude is accused of having the 31 phones, which police believe to be stolen.
According to the police, the phones were wrapped in red and blue non-woven carrier bags sealed with cello tape and placed in a white gunia.
The suspect allegedly posed as a hawker selling cheap foodstuffs to pedestrians—a business commonly associated with his fellow countrymen in major towns across Kenya.
He was arrested on December 13 following an intelligence tip-off from members of the public.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi, the accused denied the charges and was released on a bond of Ksh 300,000 or an alternative cash bail of Ksh 200,000.
Additionally, the court ordered the confiscation of his passport pending the hearing and determination of the case.
