Bus ferrying Tanzanian MPs to Mombasa for EALA games involved in accident

A bus ferrying Tanzania Members of Parliament to the 14th edition of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Games in Mombasa was involved in a road accident on Friday morning.

While the exact details of the incident remain unclear, Kenya’s National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has confirmed that no fatalities occurred.

Speaking to journalists at the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Station, Wetangula revealed that some of the legislators sustained various injuries during the incident.

“One bus carrying some of our colleagues from Tanzania was involved in an accident. We have no fatalities but some injuries,” he said, adding that the injured MPs have been rushed to hospital and are receiving treatment.

The Speaker further added that a more comprehensive report on the incident will be available later.

“You will get better information once we get to Mombasa. The team of leaders who are involved in the management of the games will be able to appraise you and we wish a quick recovery to those who have sustained various injuries,” he stated.

The accident, which occurred on Friday morning, took place after the bus ferrying them reportedly lost control and rammed into an oncoming lorry in the Mbande area of Dodoma.

Speaking to Tanzanian news outlet Mwananchi, Dodoma Regional Police Commander George Katabazi revealed that the accident happened at around 2 am.

Katanazi further revealed that the bus driver failed to heed the traffic alert but instead chose to overtake another vehicle along the narrow road, subsequently leading to the head-on-collision.

He further confirmed that the driver of the bus has since been arrested. However, he revealed that the victims of the accident were in stable condition after being rushed to the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital in Dodoma.

While addressing journalists, Katabazi urged drivers to be cautious while ferrying passengers especially during this festive season, as such could lead to injuries and even deaths.
