Busia County has become the fourth county to pass the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) referendum Bill after Siaya, Homa Bay and Kisumu. – By John Mutiso.
The Busia county assembly voted unanimously in support of the Bill during a session on Tuesday morning.
This comes after the Busia County Assembly’s Justice and Human Rights Committee finalized public hearings on February 10th.
Participants welcomed the proposal to increase the equitable share to counties from 15% to 35% and the creation of the Ward Fund saying the proposal will strengthen devolution, spur development and boost the economy of counties.
Only Baringo County has so far rejected the Bill during a chaotic session last week.
However, section of disgruntled Baringo MCAs, majorly drawn from the KANU party, have gone to court seeking to overturn the recent shooting down of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) driven Constitutional Amendment Bill.
This is due to the fact that the bill was not tabled in a proper manner, ignoring public participation process.
20 more counties are expected to pass the BBI referendum Bill as 24 out of 47 counties are required to pass the Bill.
Nairobi and Kisii counties are expected to finalize their decision within the coming days.
