The Cabinet has approved the implementation of the Nairobi Railway City Central Station and Public Realm Project.
Chaired by President William Ruto at State House, the meeting backed this flagship infrastructure venture as part of the capital’s broader urban transformation agenda.
The project, which aims to decongest the Central Business District and attract new private investment, will see the outdated Nairobi Central Station redeveloped into a cutting-edge, multi-modal transport hub.
Designed to meet the growing demand for efficient urban transit, the new facility will include nine platforms and enhanced access bridges, enabling the evacuation of up to 30,000 passengers per hour.
With projections estimating passenger numbers to reach 400,000 daily by 2030 and 600,000 by 2045, the upgrade is seen as essential to keeping pace with Nairobi’s rapid urbanisation. The improved public realm will also unlock surrounding underutilised land, drive economic activity, and increase foot traffic to the city centre.
Backed by secured funding, the project will link to key transport infrastructure including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line 3, commuter rail services, and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) connection to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Beyond transport, the development is expected to catalyse job creation, urban regeneration, and sustainable economic growth — establishing the station not just as a gateway, but as a symbol of Nairobi’s future.
Construction is expected to begin later this year, marking a new chapter in Nairobi’s transformation into a 21st-century city.
