Cabinet Gives Nod To Host AFCON In 2027

The cabinet of President William Ruto has approved a proposal to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

“This is a stepping stone towards the target of Harambee Stars qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in 2030,” the statement read.

This will be done in collaboration with the East African Community partner countries.

Cabinet stated that the joint bid would use sports to promote regional integration.

This means that Kenya can now submit a bid to the Confederation of African Football in collaboration with the EAC community by writing a letter to the Confederation of African Football.

The country will also need to prepare in terms of stadium construction and infrastructure.

CAF announced in 2017 that Kenya would not be able to host the African Nations Championship due to a lack of preparation.

The championship was scheduled for January 2018.
