CAF Introduces Real-Time Remote Interpretation for CHAN 2024 Press Conferences

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has rolled out Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI) at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024, marking a major milestone in sports communication.

For the first time in CAF’s history, and among the first for global sports bodies, accredited journalists covering CHAN 2024 in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda can access real-time multilingual audio interpretation directly on their mobile phones.

The system eliminates the need for bulky headsets or complex equipment. Upon arrival at press venues, journalists scan a QR code that opens a browser link, granting access to live interpretation channels managed by professional CAF interpreters.

CAF says the innovation ensures that no journalist is hindered by language barriers, underscoring its commitment to inclusion and innovation in football communication.

“It is simple, cost-effective and above all, accessible, allowing journalists to follow and record in real-time using only their phones and earphones,” said Patrice Godonou, head of CAF’s Language Services Unit.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy by CAF’s Communications Division to improve media services at CHAN 2024. Other enhancements include stronger Wi-Fi connectivity, expanded digital content distribution, and streamlined match-day operations to support the more than 800 accredited journalists covering the tournament.

The launch comes as CHAN 2024 heads into the knockout stage, with quarterfinals scheduled for August 22 and 23. With RSI and other digital upgrades, CAF is not only elevating African football on the pitch but also redefining how it is covered and experienced worldwide.
