A city car dealer Joseph Kairu Wambui alias Khalif Kairo has told Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi that he has abruptly become bankrupt and he cannot afford to raise Ksh 500,000 cash bail he has so far been ordered to pay to secure his release.
According to Khalif Kairo through his advocate, his current bank account balance reads only Ksh 61,000 which far much below what the court required him to pay for his release.
Kairo had appeared before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina at Milimani Law Courts where the court was expected to give a ruling on the release of his passport after he moved court requesting for the passport to enable him travel to the United States to attend a fundraiser.
The court empathizing with his current situation released him on a personal bond of Ksh 3 million meaning he will only have to sign a commitment that he will indeed attend court throughout the hearing of the case.
Chief Magistrate Onyina in releasing the passport to Kairo, said that although the prosecution had objected to the said release, the accused person rights including freedom to movement that should not be limited.
“The accused herein has been travelling outside the country and has always returned, there’s no fear that he will not return to the country should the passport be released. The application for the release of the passport is hereby allowed…” ruled C.M Lucas Onyina.
The court directed Kairo to return the passport to court upon jetting back to the country.
Hearing of the case will be on May 26, 2025.
