A church caretaker is on the run after stealing Ksh1.5 million from ACK All Saints Mountain View Church Kangemi, Nairobi County, on Sunday, October 9.
The man who lived in the church compound is suspected of interfering with the church’s electric power in order to disable the CCTV cameras.
According to the church’s treasurer, Elizabeth Njoki, the caretaker searched the altar for the contribution money.
As she went to collect the money on the morning of Monday, October 10 accompanied by one of the church elders, they were shocked to find the Lord’s table, where bread and wine are consecrated, ransacked and the money kept in a drawer beneath the altar missing.
The congregants had raised the money for the development of the church.
Detectives in the area have launched a manhunt for the suspect in response to the report made at the Kangemi Police Station.
Shocked flock members milled around the church, conversing in low tones as they tried to come to terms with the disappearance of the money intended for the development of the community church.
They wondered aloud how the parish’s trusted custodian could have acted in such an unseemly manner.
Some were heard cursing the suspect, declaring that he would never prosper, while others rallied for his forgiveness and asked him to present himself and seek forgiveness from the congregation and God.
Nairobi police chief James Mugera said detectives have launched a manhunt for the suspect, who lived within the church compound but fled after the incident.
He stated that they are following up on vital leads as to the whereabouts of the missing man.
