The National Police Service (NPS) has announced the interdiction of multiple officers attached to Central Police Station in Nairobi following the controversial death of Albert Omondi Ojwang’, a 26-year-old man from Homa Bay County, who died while in police custody last week.
NPS spokesperson Iri Nyaga confirmed that the Inspector General of Police has ordered the immediate interdiction of the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), the duty officer on shift that night, the cell sentry, and all other officers present or involved during the time of the incident.
“The National Police Service remains committed to upholding the rule of law, human rights, transparency, and accountability within the service,” read part of the statement.
Ojwang’s death has triggered national outrage and widespread condemnation from civil society and political leaders, with many pointing to a worrying trend of custodial deaths in Kenya.
Amnesty International Kenya and other human rights organizations have demanded an independent investigation and full accountability.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since launched a formal probe into the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death.
Governor Gladys Wanga of Homa Bay County also weighed in, describing the incident as “deeply troubling” and called for swift justice and transparency. She pledged the county’s support to Ojwang’s grieving family.
Protests are expected in the coming days, with activists and youth-led movements planning demonstrations under the trending hashtag #JusticeForAlbertOjwang.
The police have pledged full cooperation with IPOA during the investigation and promised to provide further updates as new developments emerge.
