Harambee Stars defender Michael Kibwage has expressed confidence that Kenya will finish at the summit of Group A when they face Zambia in their final CHAN 2024 group match this Sunday, 17 August, at 3:00pm at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Kenya leads Group A with seven points after victories over Morocco and DR Congo, plus a draw against Angola. The Stars need a win to secure top spot and a home quarterfinal tie against the runners-up from Group B. Angola were eliminated on Thursday following a 2-0 loss to DR Congo, who remain in contention for qualification.
Kibwage, who joined record Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia earlier this week, said the short break before the Zambia clash had been vital for recovery. “We needed that rest to reconnect with our families and reflect on the memories of this great run. It has been a successful campaign so far, but we know the job is not yet done,” he said.
The 27-year-old warned against underestimating Zambia, who have lost all three of their CHAN 2024 matches. “We expect Zambia to bring their best, but we are taking it one game at a time. The level of camp training has been impressive, and we are confident of getting a favourable result,” he noted.
Kibwage praised the fans as the team’s “12th man” and urged them to pack Kasarani on Sunday. “The fans have been amazing. Their energy pushes us to give our all. We want them to turn up in big numbers for this final group game,” he said.
A win would cement Kenya’s place at the top of Group A and provide a major morale boost heading into the knockout stage of their historic home campaign.
