Chaos erupted in the Nandi County Assembly as Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) clashed and exchanged blows during a heated voting session on a Special Adhoc Committee report recommending the dismissal of nearly the entire county cabinet.
The 15-member Adhoc Committee, chaired by Benjamin Kerich, was established a month ago to scrutinize the performance of the Nandi County administration.
Presenting the report, Kerich stated that the committee had reviewed various development projects initiated by Governor Stephen Sang’s administration since 2022, uncovering significant irregularities and issuing recommendations for corrective action.
Among the committee’s recommendations was the dismissal of nine County Executive Committee Members for alleged misconduct.
The report also called for the removal of nine Chief Officers due to legal breaches and suggested the suspension of three directors of various county departments pending further investigation and a lifestyle audit by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
In addition, the committee proposed that Governor Sang revoke the appointment of Nancy Jeruto as Acting CEO and Secretary of the Nandi County Public Service Board. They also recommended the suspension of four board members, urging the governor to initiate the process for their removal from office.
The chaos within the assembly broke out when some committee members, who had previously supported the recommendations, allegedly voted against adopting the report, causing tension. In the final vote, 20 MCAs opposed the report while 11 supported it, leaving advocates of the report angered by their colleagues’ last-minute shift in position.
MCAs opposing the report argued that dismissing key county executives would disrupt county operations. Meanwhile, supporters of the report vowed to stand with the public, demanding accountability and calling on President William Ruto to intervene in Nandi County’s leadership.
Security was stable throughout the day, but tensions flared in the evening as two groups of residents gathered near the assembly gates, leading to a disturbance. Police intervened, dispersing the crowd with tear gas to restore order outside the assembly.
