What began as an eagerly awaited talent night at AIC Chebisaas Boys High School on Friday, July 18, turned into a dramatic protest the following night, as students stormed the Kimumu-Eldoret Highway in a rare late-night demonstration.
According to multiple student accounts, the uproar was triggered by dissatisfaction with a school-organized concert that failed to deliver on expectations.
The event, advertised as a “talent night with surprise guests,” promised high-energy performances from the Bada Dancers and Big Afrique DJs.
Students, who each paid KSh 250 to attend, claimed they had been led to believe a popular national artist would headline the evening.
However, when a local Kalenjin musician appeared as the surprise act, disappointment turned to outrage.
Chants and whistles filled the air as dozens of students, some covering their faces with jumpers and jackets, marched along Kisumu Road toward Eldoret Town under the cover of darkness.
Videos shared online show students moving in large groups under streetlights, with traffic slowing to a crawl as motorists cautiously navigated around the crowd.
Others pointed out the lack of consultation and transparency in event planning, adding fuel to long-standing frustrations.
School authorities have yet to release an official statement.
Local education officials are expected to meet school leadership in the coming days to address the unrest and evaluate the administration’s handling of student engagement.
