In Summary: Chelsea went into the game knowing that a win was required if they were to have any chance of winning the Premier League for the first time since 2017.
Manchester City shattered Chelsea’s Premier League title dreams with a 1-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon that was far more dominant than the scoreline indicated.
Indeed, Thomas Tuchel must now weigh the full consequences of being held at arm’s length by England’s best squad.
Last season, the German won three consecutive games against Pep Guardiola, culminating in a magnificent Champions League success in Lisbon in May.
The Blues were thrashed in a worryingly one-sided match in Manchester, with Kevin De Bruyne’s magnificent effort rightfully settling the top-of-the-table duel in Manchester’s favor.
Chelsea went into the game knowing that a win was required if they were to have any chance of winning the Premier League for the first time since 2017.
They never seemed like they were going to win, though. In the first half, they couldn’t even generate a shot on goal.
After the break, they had one wonderful chance, but Ederson stopped Romelu Lukaku’s conventional finish.
Lukaku was expected to provide a whole new dimension to the Blues attack, but he has only scored eight goals in 21 appearances in all competitions this season.
Some said that the Belgium striker was once again isolated in front of the goal, but Tuchel, predictably, disagreed.
“Romelu Lukaku needs to do [his own] service on occasion,” Tuchel remarked after the game on BT Sport. “He suffered a lot of ball turnovers in extremely promising situations.”
Chelsea are still in a better position than the majority of the chasers.
They’re also in strong shape to win two trophies by the end of February, and they’re still among the favorites to win both the Champions League and the FA Cup.
